Strive Masiyiwa, the Founder and Executive Chairman of the Econet Group was recently recognized by the Yale University and awarded an honorary Doctorate of humane letters by the esteemed institution, Yale University.
Strive Masiyiwa was one of the 11 people conferred with honors doctorates in their respective disciplines. These included Chimamanda Achidi an author and Lawrence S Bacow a scholar.
In their tribute to Masiyiwa the university stated that they had recognized Masiyiwa because of his ability to see opportunities that others miss and for demonstrating the courage of his convictions at every turn. They described him as brave,visionary and a bold business leader who was devoted to humanitarian cause.
Strive Masiyiwa is the co founder of Higherlife foundation, an organization that seeks to help underprivileged students. He has helped numerous people achieve their academic goals. Masiyiwa and his wife are also involved in several projects that help local children benefit. He was also instrumental in curbing the cholera outbreak last year by donating millions of dollars and equipment. Masiyiwa also made donations towards the rehabilitation of cyclone Idai ravaged areas.
The university further stated that Masiyiwa’s innovation and generosity have transformed a continent and improved countless lives. Indeed the businessman has brought improved and accessible technology to Zimbabwe and Africa as a whole.
He has business interests in several countries including South Africa. Strive Masiyiwa had a long standing legal battle with the government of Zimbabwe before he was finally granted authority to set up his mobile network company Econet.
